Crazy Insurance Policies - 10 Policies You Didn’t Know Existed

Think insurance is boring? Well, think again.

In the world of insurance, most of us are familiar with the usual suspects—homeowners, auto, life, and health insurance. But not all risk is predictable... or even logical.

That’s why today, we’re sharing 10 real, outrageous, and totally fascinating insurance policies that actually exist.

1.From Lips to Hips - Body Parts Insurance

It makes sense for a racecar driver to have an insurance plan, but what about these?

Heidi Klum’s legs: $2.2M

J.Lo’s butt: $27M

Keith Richards’ middle finger: $1.6M

Dolly Parton’s chest: $600K

Tom Jones’ chest hair: $7M

Gene Simmons’ tongue: $1M

Interestingly, anyone can insure a body part. Hand models, wine tasters…. and even you, but it comes at a cost. One Dutch winemaker insured his nose for $7.8M, paying about $23K/year in premiums.

2. Career Safety Net

Some celebrities don’t stop at body parts; they insure their entire careers. Comedy duo Abbott and Costello had a $250K policy in case their friendship ended in an argument, and David Beckham was covered for $151M if a career-ending injury struck.

When your talent is your paycheck, a safety net like that makes sense.

3. Paranormal Policies

Two pub owners in England took “spirited” protection to a new level.

One pub in Lowestoft took out a policy because he worried a ghost would injure his customers. The pesky ghost was known to throw glasses inside the 500-year-old Royal Falcon Hotel, which is located beside an old graveyard.

Another hotel paid to cover death or disability caused by ghosts or “abnormal phenomena.”

Neither has filed a claim… yet!!

4. Alien Abduction

Afraid of being beamed up? You’re not alone. At least three insurers, including one in Central Florida, offer alien abduction coverage. Some are serious, others are gag gifts. Believe it or not, a few have actually paid out.

5. When You Need More Than an Umbrella

When the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957, people feared space junk raining down. Lloyd’s of London jumped in with a $22,000 policy (about $200K today) against death by falling satellite debris.

Thankfully, no one’s ever needed it.

6. Thailand Riot Insurance

During the 2010 unrest, Thailand’s tourism dropped by 8%. To win travellers back, the government offered $10,000 in coverage for any riot-related injuries and/or $100/day for delays caused by demonstrations.

7. Cold Feet? This is Better Than a Good Pair of Socks

We have all heard of event insurance to cover you for hurricanes and floods, But what if the Fiona that calls off your wedding isn’t the storm’s name, but your fiancée’s?

“Cold Feet” insurance reimburses innocent financiers (not the runaway bride or groom) if a wedding gets called off.

8. Multiple Births Insurance

Twins, triplets, or quadruplets? “Multiple Birth Insurance”, aka twin-surance, helps cover the surprise costs of multiples. It’s a popular option in the U.K. but hasn’t really caught on in North America.

9.Lottery Insurance

What if your entire office wins the lottery and says “I quit” the next day?

That’s exactly what happened in the U.K. when seven employees quit after winning £6M each. “Lottery Syndicate Insurance” is a policy that protects employers from the financial burden of losing multiple employees at once.

10. Bed Bug Insurance

Homeowners’ policies don’t cover bed bugs, and getting rid of them can cost thousands. A single home can run $1K–$2K, while apartments or Airbnbs can rack up way more. If you rent or host, it might be worth considering.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s ghosts, aliens, or falling satellites, these wild policies prove one thing: Insurance is about protecting what matters most, even if it’s a little out of this world.
