Within 0-5 feet of your home
This is the most important area to focus on. Keep it free from combustible materials. Clear away leaves, pine needles, bark mulch, and firewood. Use gravel, stone, or pavers to create a safer buffer around your home.
Between 5-30 feet
Choose fire-resistant plants. Keep them healthy and well-watered, and give them enough space so flames can't easily jump from one plant to the next. Always keep your lawn mowed to under 10 cm.
Between 30-100+ feet
Thin out trees and shrubs, remove dead vegetation, and trim low-hanging branches. Creating more space between trees prevents fires from climbing into the canopy and spreading faster.
