ATV and Snowmobile Nova Scotia Provincial Insurance Requirements

We recently worked on an account that involved a driver who had a conviction for operating an ATV with no insurance.  Due to this, the insurer is getting off risk and the vehicle now has to be insured with facility association = Higher rates and reduced coverage.  This is particularly more expensive when the vehicle is financed and you must carry Collision and Comprehensive coverage in order to satisfy lender requirements.

The following is information regarding ATV No Insurance Convictions, these are considered serious to insurers, same as cell phone use convictions.

These are the provincial regulations and statements on Liability Insurance on ATV’s:

March 2007, new regulations came into effect regarding fees for registering and permitting your OHV, safety training requirements, areas to ride, as well as, describing how written permission can be given by landowners.

Liability insurance 15B: No person shall operate an off-highway vehicle on any land of which the person is not an owner or occupier unless that person carries third-party liability insurance in at least the amount required by the regulations.

You are required to insure the vehicle for third-party liability with a minimum limit of $500,000.

What type of insurance am I required to purchase?

¹You are required to carry third-party liability insurance under the Off-highway Vehicles Act and are also required to carry accident benefits, and uninsured and underinsured automobile coverage as required by the Insurance Act.

For information on registering your off-highway vehicle, call 1-800-898-7668 or (902) 424-5851, or visit your nearest Registry of Motor Vehicles location.
