How to Choose a Reputable Home BuilderChoosing a good home builder to build your custom home may seem easy -especially if one of their model homes or designs has fantastic curb appeal. Planning a custom home build is exciting, but it's important to do your research and find a trustworthy home builder with a reputation for building quality homes that adhere to all building codes.

Do your research

A quick Google search will reveal customer reviews, as well as a search on Facebook, if they have a Facebook Page. Create a list of home builders you are interested in working with and then do your research!

In addition to researching online reviews, ask family and friends if they have heard of any reputable home builders. Ask in online community groups as well. More often than not word of mouth will tell you the good and bad of working with various home builders.

Local building inspectors may also be a good information source and may know of the types of homes various builders are known for building well and where they are located.

Interview home builders

Building a custom home is a big investment - in time and money! So, why not take some extra time and write down questions you would like to ask and then ask the builders in detail so that you have enough information that you are not only comfortable working with them, but also trust them.

Feel free to also ask for past client references. You can also request to tour a home they have built, and although this may be possible in-person, pictures or a virtual tour might be an option. It never hurts to ask!

Once you have selected two to three builders, ask each of them for a detailed quote. This should include the types of materials they will use and permits. Don't work with any home builder or contractor that does not provide a contract.

Ask for their insurance coverage

Most importantly, make sure to only work with insured home builders and contractors. This will protect you from financial loss in case the contractor damages your property or injures you or others. Ask your home builder if they are covered by a Commercial General Liability policy

If you're building a new home, make sure you are insured in case something goes wrong. Contact an OTC Insurance broker today to get started.
